One of the great treasures of Leelanau County is Lake Leelanau. This very large body of water, running 15 miles long through Leelanau County, is really two lakes in one. They are aptly named North Lake Leelanau and South Lake Leelanau. North Lake is 2,950 acres of clear deep water. Maximum depth of 121 feet allows for its incredible blue color.
Owning a North Lake Leelanau home means you have an amazing amount of hard packed sand bottom available for exploring and for those boaters out for a fun day on the sand bars. The Leland River runs out of North Lake into the town of Leland and then empties into Lake Michigan. A dam was constructed in 1854 and is still in place. Boaters are able to navigate the Leland River to the quaint village for a quick lunch stop or a day of sightseeing. Historic Fishtown is a must see while visiting Leland. Stop in at the Cove and have a "Chubby Mary" and a bowl of their seafood chowder.
Heading south out of North Lake you will travel through "The Narrows" and the town of Lake Leelanau. This is the river like body of water that joins North and South Lakes. This area is filled with wildlife and would be a perfect day trip in your kayak. Stop in at the bait shop and fill up the gas tank for a day filled with fishing and exploring, or dock the boat in the Lake Leelanau Narrows for a sandwich at Dick's Pour House or a glass of wine at Boathouse Winery and Tasting Room.
South Lake Leelanau is 5,370 acres with a maximum depth of 62 feet and has much to offer boaters and fishermen. Finding a South Lake Leelanau Home gains you spectacular long distance views and you can not beat the sunrises and sunsets!
Fishermen have the opportunity to catch perch, walleye, bass, northern pike, trout and pan fish. Boaters can have a great day on the water – skiing, tubing, and just relaxing. A unique feature Lake Leelanau offers is the availability of "boat to" bait shop, gas pumps and many dining options. There are great restaurants and small taverns located on both South and North Lakes. This is a great lake to find your perfect Northern Michigan property or getaway home. It allows for easy access to many quaint towns and Traverse City’s amenities.
