About Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake is located near Lake Michigan in Benzie County about 25 miles southwest of Traverse City and about 2 miles northeast of Frankfort. It measures approximately 2.5 by 8 miles, and has a maximum depth of 165 feet. At 9,854 acres it is Michigan's ninth largest inland lake. Wow, Crystal Lake is a beautiful sight no matter when you are visiting or residing because of Crystal's pristine natural beauty.  Crystal Lake is home to people from all parts of the nation and the ajoining town of Beulah makes this lake community a rarity.

Crystal Lake is also surrounded by sandy beaches from an attempt in 1873 to connect Crystal Lake and Lake Michigan via a channel. The lake level of Crystal Lake was higher than the level of Lake Michigan and when the channel was opened, the water level in Crystal Lake dropped. While the project was unsuccessful, the lowering of the lake level uncovered sandy beaches, including the current public beach at Beulah.

The watershed that feeds Crystal Lake is very small leading to an exceptionally clear and beautiful water that creates its Crystal name. The surface area of the lake is 35% of the total area of the watershed; both land and water combined.
