Mullett Lake is named after surveyor John Mullett, who performed the area's originial survey with partner William Burt between 1840-1843.
Mullett Lake is comprised of 17,360 acres and holds more water than any other lake in the Cheboygan River watershed. At its southern end the lake is little more than a couple miles from its sister lake, Burt, though it holds more water because of it depth, often in excess of 110 feet. Water flows into Mullett from Burt via Indian River and is a popular boating destination due to its access from major state and federal roadways. The lake receives additional flow from the Pigeon River and its pristine surroundings at Pigeon River Bay. Mullett is the third largest inland lake in Michigan and anchors the 38 mile long Inland Lakes Waterway.
Mullett Lake has it's beginning slightly north and east of Indian River and C-68. Exit US Interstate-75 at mile marker #310 near Indian River and immediately head north to travel either the west or east shore of this spectacular resource. You'll find ample access through a variety of public launches as well as the village of Topinabee along the west shore and Aloha on its east drive. The Cheboygan River begins at the lakes' north end and travels along M-33 a short distance before entering the jurisdiction of Cheboygan, Michigan.
