About Sofo

History

The area of downtown south of Fourteenth Street has been coined "SoFo" by a number of those taking up residence in this blossoming portion of town.  This area of town was known for two main purposes, golf and logging.  In the early 1800's Boardman Lake was a natural lake within the then Ottawa river.  It wasn't until 1848 that Captain Harry Boardman came to the area and established a saw mill along the lake shore.  He used the lake to float the lumber and eventually send it out to Lake Michigan for distribution throughout the midwest and beyond.  In 1852, Captain Boardman sold his interest to local lumber barons Tracy Lay and Perry Hanna but his name remained attached to the river and the only natural lake alongs its course.  The Traverse City Golf Club is celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2015.  Founded in 1915 on a 40 acre tract of land donated by Hanna and Lay, the original club consisted of a modest two story clubhouse and 9 holes.  Stock was sold for $125 and dues were $25 per year.  By 1928, the club had grown and an additional 9 holes were added.  Today the club's location on the edge of downtown is truly unique for a parcel of this size.  I doubt the founder then would have imagined what this little corner of northern Michigan would become.

Geography

For the purposes of our searches, SoFo extends south from Fourteenth with Boardman Lake as the eastern boundary and US 31 (Division) as the western boundary until it reaches the Traverse City Golf and Country Club.  The neighborhood west of Cass Street is dominated by homes built in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's with some newer mult family options along Veteran's Drive.  East of Cass are some older homes along with a newer lakeside development with a mix of beautiful single family homes, detached condos and even apartment style condominiums.  Pricing in SoFo tends to be a bit more attractive as it does take a little more travel to get to the bay and downtown shopping and restaurants.  It's a great option for those seeking a little more peace and quiet and a lot for your buying dollar.

Features

Many residents here probably opt for biking into downtown rather than walking but the neighborhood is ideally suited for getting in and out of town as well as accessing all the shopping areas along Division and The Grand Traverse Mall.  Right Brain Brewery moved their operations to the east end of Sixteenth Street in 2013 providing a terrific spot to gather with friends, enjoy a craft beer or cider and unwind.  A number of other eateries and shops line Fourteenth Street as well providing other convenient spots to visit.  Boardman Lake is a wonderful recreational body of water and home to The Travererse Area Community Sailing program.  Classes and instruction for young and old take place on the lake all summer long.  It can provide for a terrific view when all the boats are under sail.  The fishing in the lake can also be phenomenal for everything from bass and pike to bluegill, perch and the occasional walleye.  A boat ramp at the southeast end of the lake behind the library provides boating access.
