About Green Lake

Green Lake is one of the many lakes located within minutes of Traverse City in southwest Grand Traverse County. It is situated near the town of Interlochen, home of the world famous Interlochen Arts Academy. This is a 2,000 acre all-sports lake with many year round residents as well as many summer property owners from throughout the country. Historically Green Lake has been one of the better water quality lakes in the area with excellent fishing opportunities for everything from smallmouth bass to lake trout.

Green Lake is an excellent choice in waterfront living and there are many families on the lake that have been occupying the same cottage or home for many generations. On many days and evenings you are likely to see a sailboat skimming along the surface, and a grandfather and grandkids out fishing while music wafts through the air from one of the many outdoor performances at the Interlochen Arts Academy. The smell of someone grilling on the deck as the kids jump from docks add to the peaceful sensory surroundings that are common for the lucky residents along the sandy shores of Green Lake.  You may want to skip grilling out and head to the Hofbrau for some of the best fried perch in the area. This waterway offers the active family many choices to enjoy the water and it is close to many summertime area staples such as the Cherry Bowl Drive In Theatre, or Sleeping Bear Dunes. Many area golf courses are just a short drive away as well. Crystal Mountain, located about 15-20 minutes to the southwest offers a great golf and ski destination for year round recreation. Downtown Traverse City is only a 15-20 minute drive for area shopping, fine-dining, and home of the annual Cherry Festival, Film Festival, and wine tours.

Green Lake is one of the headwater lakes of the Betsie River, which flows into Lake Michigan in the town of Frankfort. The Little Betsie River flows in from the north from Duck Lake and outlets at the southern end of the lake. There are two public boat launches on the lake and other shoreline sites are the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Interlochen State Parks primitive campground along the eastern shore. This lake ranges in depth to over 100ft. which provides excellent cold water environment for smelt, perch, ciscoes, and lake trout. Green lake is also home to some monster smallmouth bass, pike, blue gill, and rock bass.
