About Little Manistee River

The Little Manistee River offers the angler the best of all fishing worlds. This river flows directly into Lake Michigan, through Manistee Lake from the headwaters near the town of Luther. This river offers the angler a peaceful setting with much of the land and surroundings residing within the Pere Marquette State Forest and Manistee National Forest. The river features excellent hatches in the spring and summer to target resident brown trout, rainbow trout, steelhead, and some brook trout. The river is fairly easy to wade and much of the stream has excellent holding cover for trout.

In autumn, the river receives a salmon run, followed by a nice late fall/winter run of steelhead, lake run brown trout and Coho salmon. In the spring this river receives a great run of steelhead, and it is one of the main tributaries for wild salmon and steelhead in the state. Near the town of Stronach there is a state operated fish hatchery for Salmon in the fall and Steelhead in the spring where the eggs are taken and fertilized for Michigan’s stocking programs and to populate other streams around the country. For more information check out the Little Manistee River Weir.

The Little Manistee River runs very cool through the summer months and provides excellent shade and habitat for the juvenile migratory fish, as well as the resident trout population. Cool Creek empties into the river just above Bear Track Campground and there are natural springs throughout the system to help keep temperatures cool. The Little Manistee River is also known for its excellent Hex hatch starting in mid to late June. Due to its smaller size, it does not receive very much boat or canoe traffic and is a very peaceful and pleasant place to fish in the tannin stained water for rising trout. The Little Manistee has been designated a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream from CR633 to the Manistee County line.
